Scholarships

Hello!  Welcome to my site

The Scobee Scholarship was created in honor of Dick Scobee, the Commander of the Challenger Space Shuttle, and is awarded annually by the Florida Association for the Gifted. Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded to an eligible male and female gifted student, interested in pursuing studies in the areas of math/science/technology. This year’s recipients, pictured above, were the 2012 winners.  The pair received their awards at the FLAG conference May 5, 2012.  Caroline (pictured center left), is a junior at Ponte Vedra High School in Ponte Vedra Beach. She decided that she wanted to pursue a career in science during middle school while working on her first science fair project in the sixth grade - her topic, the ubiquitous iPod. Her research led to a publication in Audiology Today entitled “Do Middle School Students Set Safe Volume Levels for Routine iPod Use? A Comparison of Monaural vs. Binaural Listening Trends.” She plans to attend a leading research university and major in either molecular biology or mathematics.  Joshua (far right) is a junior at the Pine View School for the Gifted in Osprey, is an aspiring physicist.  He will be spending three weeks this summer delving into the complex subject of quantum mechanics at Stanford University. He is the co-founder of his school’s Young Inventor’s Club which is currently working on developing a submarine that will release specific bacteria in order to clean up oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico.  He plans to attend Stanford University and major in Physics.
